I battle the urge to pick my favorite players and instead I study stats, streaks, and past tournament performance. Usually I end up with a little of both in my final selections, but I'm usually picking the wrong guys in each category.

This past week as brutal. I have picked Ernie Els in every event he's played in this year because I believed with my whole heart that he will win in 2010. So far he's gotten me nothing. In an attempt to change my luck and avoid another disappointing week, I called in my brother to give some advice. Not on the squad was Els. My heart was torn, but after all of these weeks, I was almost relieved that JP let me off the hook. Maybe this is my week!

I get a glimpse of the leader board on Saturday and almost choke on my popcorn chicken. I don't have to tell you who's leading. By Sunday I played the "if only" scenario in my head about a thousand times. I could barely watch. I finally convinced myself that I may be personally responsible for this win because I didn't pick him...maybe I have been the jinx all along!! (just let me believe that, okay?)

Of course I'm thrilled for the Big Easy - mostly because he's a great guy, and partly because I had another 2010 prediction come true! But that doesn't erase the fact that I could have gotten back into contention on my fantasy picks if I would have hung on to Els for one more week...oh the frustration!

Remember a few weeks back when Cameron Beckman won the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico? I was going to pick him! He grew up in Minnesota so that is enough reason to pick him, right? But of course I looked at stats (Cut, Cut, T80) and decided there were better choices. I remember looking at the results online and talking back to my monitor - why? WHY?

For this year's Match Play, four of us did the bracket. Wins were worth more as you got deeper into the weekend and I was feeling confident. First round, I get 24 of 32 right!! I'm thrilled! But in looking closer, 2 of my final 4 were already out. Whoops. By the round of 16 I had 2 guys left...with 8 guys still in hunt, I had none of them. I found myself completely uninterested in the finals because I had no one left to root for.

Knowing how terrible I've been in fantasy golf, why in the world am I subjecting myself to this weekly torture?

Fantasy golf is a great way to stay connected with golf pals, especially if you're in the off-season for half of the year. Last year I loved my weekly talk with my brother as we made our team picks. Our league dissolved this year, and I miss talking golf with him. It's fun making connections with different people and a little trash talking is always enjoyable.

The goofy thing is, even though I stink it up week after week, by Monday morning I get that feeling that this week I'm going pick the right guys!! I guess that's eternal optimist in me. And, hey, I haven't been ALL bad!

If you don't mind, I'd like to skip down memory lane for just one more moment...

I'm remembering a little challenge I had a few years ago - WGC Match Play - my choice...Tiger or the rest of the field. Had I been a Tiger fanatic, the decision would be a no brainer, but I struggled with the choice because it forced me to root against everyone else I liked more than TW...I tried to negotiate a few more players, but no deal. It was one guy or 63.

After serious deliberation I went with Tiger (even though my math brain said take 63!)...and if you remember, Tiger almost went out in the first round! But he clawed his way back and won...and won, and won, and won, and won, and WON!! It was weird rooting for Tiger that week, but I did.

And now that we know Tiger will be back at the Masters, there will be some serious contemplating to do! Will he be ready to win right out of the gate? He's shown us in the past that he can, but I'm not sure.

I'm determined to get at least one winner this season (Steve Stricker's win this year was in Pre-Season and didn't count!). Can it be done? For my sanity, I hope so.

Forgoing stats and past performance I went all heart this week. Who should you put your money on at the Transitions Championship, you ask?

Over at http://www.kerplookee.com/ I have taken Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, Brandt Snedeker, Tom Lehman, Charles Howell III, and JB Holmes.

Come on team!!! This could be my week!

That even includes tournaments he has never played.

“Historically, he hasn’t played the week before the Masters,” said Steve Timms, tournament director of the Houston Open, which is the week before the Masters. “But these are unusual times. We’re prepared from a security and media standpoint. We’ve been watching the media closely, and we’ve had some weird ones.”

Timms, like other tournament directors, are in touch with PGA Tour officials about who is applying for media credentials.

The more immediate focus is in Florida. Woods hasn’t played at Innisbrook since Kelli Kuehne was his partner in 1996 at the old JCPenney Classic. Long before Woods was exposed for cheating on his wife, there had been increasing speculation that he was considering the Transitions Championship one of these years, although this doesn’t appear to be one of them.

Even so, tournament director Gerald Goodman said tour officials contacted him last week.

“They described it as talking to all tournaments,” Goodman said. “They gave no indication that they knew anything, they were just wanting to be thorough. They asked us if we had room for media. We’re a large resort on a thousand acres. There’s plenty of room.”

Scott Wellington didn’t need a phone call to start planning. He’s the tournament director of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where Woods is a six-time champion (including last year) and lives a short drive away.

Wellington said the tour shared information from its experience at the TPC Sawgrass, where Woods spoke publicly Feb. 19 for the first time since his car accident the morning after Thanksgiving. Some 300 media came to a nearby hotel to cover the event.

Bay Hill is not the largest property, although it typically has a large media turnout because it is two weeks before the Masters.

“We’ll accommodate to the extent we’re able to,” Wellington said. “But it’s like a balloon. It can only get so big. We’ve discussed ‘Plan B’ scenarios, and we’re prepared to react as best we can. Obviously, it would help to get as much advance knowledge as we can.”

Woods typically does not enter a tournament until a day or two before the 5 p.m. Friday deadline, although there are indications from his management team that more notice will be given in this case.

PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw described the phone calls as typical conversations the tour has with its events on subjects ranging from media coverage to charity to television. In this case, another topic was added—the return of Woods.

“We’ve not indicated that we have inside knowledge,” Votaw said. “We just want them to be aware so they’re no scrambling

On http://www.wikipedia.com/ it says there are 1,300 men only members world-wide. I'm guessing I'm not friends with any of them. And, it also said that women can play on Sundays. How nice.

So, while this course may have some of the best challenges that golf can provide, it really means nothing to me if I can't ever play it...or if I could I definitely couldn't afford it.

So the question becomes...what makes a golf course great for me?

Tops for me is affordability. Since the majority of my golf budget is my yearly season pass at my home course (and I feel like I need to get my money's worth), I only have limited time and dollars for a some golf road trips during the year. So price is always a factor when I choose to play.

I'm willing to play a decent 9-hole track or a municipal course if it means I can play more! A few years ago a took a trip to Kentucky and played 3 very nice courses for under $40...one, Mineral Mound, was practically empty and had some fantastic views. This girl is always looking for a great deal!

But there are a few courses in my neck of the woods that I hope to get to once a year which are in the $80-$120 range.

So the next question that pops into my mind is...what will make me fork over more cash to play a golf course?

I appreciate a "playable" course. I'm not a fan of courses that have several holes that require carries over hazards with no bailout areas. I enjoy some "risk reward" holes, but I want there to be options.

I enjoy scenery. Elevation changes often provide interesting views and perspectives on holes. I love tree lined courses that allow you hit out of them if needed. Well maintained water hazards and bunkers can catch my eye, even if I don't like the idea of being in them. I also love to look down at a fairway and noticing the mowing patterns.

Bring on the GPS! Having not yet invested in a hand-held GPS, I especially appreciate courses that have carts with GPS. A bonus is also clearly visible yardage markers in the fairways...and I'm crazy about yardages in sprinkler heads.

This won't mean much to most, but in Minnesota there some courses that are clay based, and that makes it more of a challenge to take divots or to get under the ball. A few nice courses I play have a nice sand base and divots almost come too easy! It takes me a few holes to get used to it, but hitting down and not worrying about breaking my wrist is a nice treat sometimes.

Great greens. I'm a sucker for a nice large green with subtle breaks. Some courses have gone to circus greens that have so many levels and breaks that you're almost guaranteed a 3-putt (or more!) if you're not close to the pin. These are no fun, and they slow up play!

Speaking of slow play, I appreciate courses that have rangers...who actually keep pace of play going. At one course we like to play, a jammed tee sheet is common and it's nice that you know someone is keeping track of groups.

I also like courses that have a snack place at the turn. You can grab a bottle of water or a hot dog and not lose your place on the course. No beverage cart is definitely not a deal breaker for me, but I appreciate it when they let us know we should stock up if we won't be seeing one.

I appreciate a nice collar around the greens...I don't believe that players should be "in jail" with deep thick grass that close to the green...that should be left to the professionals.

And there's something special about golf courses that make the most of the land they are on. Lakes, rocks, trees, and streams that are showcased remind me of our connection with nature.

Bonuses include a nice clubhouse with a restaurant (where I can have a victory meal!), a well stocked pro-shop (with a sale rack or two!), Coca-cola products, free range balls, coupons, and great rate on a re-play.

My 2010 Minnesota golf course wish list includes: The Classic at Madden's, The Legend & The Quarry at Giant's Ridge, The Wilderness, and one of my favorites, Silver Bay Golf Course. We're also looking at a trip to Wisconsin, too - the Hayward area has some nice courses I hope to see, too. I would also be willing to preview Whistling Straits if anyone wanted to pony up the green fee!!

Oh heavens. I just felt my forehead and I definitely have golf fever!

I’m guessing he squeezes by with whatever he can grab from Great White Shark Enterprises, which includes: The Greg Norman Collection, Greg Norman Australian Grill, Greg Norman Turf, The Shark Shootout, Golf Para Todos, Southern Cross Development, GPS Industries, Greg Norman Golf Course Design, Greg Norman Estate Wines, Greg Norman Australian Prime, Greg Norman Productions, Mayakoba Golf Classic, Medalist Village, Medallist Development, and SKYShades.

Let’s face it, when you see his homes, his yachts, and his hat collection you think this is the way God would live if he had money.

So, why would a guy with half the money in the world decide to make waves in the golf world by proposing a world golf tour back in the mid 90s? I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing that with only half the money in the world he saw room for growth. I’m also guessing that he didn’t much care for the PGA and Commissioner Tim Finchem being in charge of his livelihood.

Accordingly, Greg asked the question, “Who put you in charge of golf around the world, Timmy?” It was an interesting question to be sure, and as Greg went on to lay out his vision for a world tour, the collective stomachs of the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Japanese PGA Tour and the Australian Tours began the dry heaves.

They couldn’t imagine the gall of this “can’t win the Masters” Australian golfer to challenge their neatly arranged power structure. The PGA owns the U.S., the English own the European Tour, etc., etc., etc. They’ll decide who plays where and for how much, but this Norman guy wants the players to be in charge. More specifically, he wants to be the player in charge.

From those scary beginnings the World Golf Championships were born; a kind of lateral arabesque strategy design to circumvent Greg Norman’s world Tour. And it worked, kind of; at the 1996 Presidents Cup golf’s five world governing bodies, the European Tour, Japan Golf Tour Organization, PGA Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour, reached agreement on several key elements of professional golf designed to create new international events, beginning in 1999. They also agreed that Greg Norman should stay out of their business, and that kind of worked as well.

From 2000 to 2006 most years two or three of the four events were staged in the United States and one or two were staged somewhere else. Starting in 2007, all three of the individual World Golf Championships events were played in the United States, which attracted criticism from some golfers, including Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, and in the media outside the United States. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem responded by insisting that playing in the U.S. is best for golf as more money can be made there than elsewhere. The 2009 elevation of the HSBC Champions, held in China, to full WGC status was designed to mute this criticism.

So today, golf has four World Golf Championships, only one of which is played outside of the U.S. Not exactly Greg Norman’s dream of a world tour. The PGA still owns the U.S., England still owns the European Tour, etc., etc., etc. We have added the FedEx Cup, the Road To Dubai and the HSBC Championship in China. A few of the big stars have invented their own world tour by traveling around the world for appearance money, but that’s not exactly what Greg Norman had in mind.

How does the joke go… Hello, I’m Tim Finchem and I’m here to help.

Ping Chairman and CEO John Solheim announced today that Ping will waive its rights that prevent the PGA Tour from prohibiting the use of pre-April 1990 Ping EYE2 irons and wedges that do not meet the 2010 Condition of Competition from being played at PGA Tour professional competitions.

The waiver goes into effect March 29 and applies to the PGA Tour, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour. As a result of a request from the USGA, Ping will also apply the waiver to the U.S. Open in June. The PGA Tour will then adopt a Condition of the Competition that does not provide an exception for the pre-April 1990 Ping EYE2 irons.

"John Solheim and Ping had a terrific opportunity to do something very positive and significant for the game of golf and we very much appreciate his willingness to take this action," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

“We’re thankful for Commissioner Finchem’s understanding of our position and his role in helPing bring about this resolution. We all believe it is in the best interests of golf,” said Solheim. “It levels the playing field on the PGA Tour and resolves a very unfortunate situation that we predicted would happen when the USGA first proposed the new groove rule more than two years ago. It keeps in place all of our other rights established in the 1993 PGA Tour settlement and the 1990 USGA settlement, including ensuring amateurs will continue to be able to play their pre-April 1990 EYE2s at all amateur events played under the USGA Rules of Golf.”

Ping and the PGA Tour stated the waiver does not take all EYE2 irons and wedges out of PGA Tour player’s hands. At the request of several players this year, Ping has made EYE2 irons and wedges with grooves that conform to the 2010 New Groove rule. Those clubs remain eligible for use.

Solheim confirmed several solutions were considered since meeting with USGA executives on

February 10 in Dallas but felt that under the circumstances the PGA Tour and U.S. Open waivers were the most appropriate ways to keep intact the spirit of his company’s original USGA and PGA Tour agreements.

“We’ve heard from a lot of loyal Ping EYE2 owners who were concerned that a resolution of the TOUR's issue might also keep them from playing their EYE2s that were grandfathered as a result of the 1990 USGA settlement. I want to reassure those golfers that their clubs remain conforming in all amateur events played under the USGA Rules of Golf,” said Solheim, who negotiated the original agreements together with his father, Karsten Solheim. “The problem is solved on the PGA Tour and the integrity of the original agreements is unaffected.”

Both the PGA Tour and Ping said they were pleased with today’s announcement by the USGA that it will be conducting a forum in the Fall of 2010 in an effort to find ways to improve the equipment rulemaking process utilized by the USGA.

“Today’s announcement by the USGA that it intends to review its rulemaking process and consider the input of all stakeholders in the game of golf demonstrates the USGA’s commitment to our great game and its obligation to develop and implement rules for the game that are in the best interests of all concerned,” Finchem said. "The PGA Tour will actively participate in the forum and will offer its own views on how the process may be improved."

Solheim is also encouraged by the USGA’s announcement that the volunteer organization will share more information with, and seek more input from a variety of sources, including manufacturers, in the rulemaking process.

“I’ve been consistent in voicing my concerns over the last several years about the challenges of the current rulemaking process and the needs to improve it to the benefit of golfers,” said Solheim. “I am hopeful this will be a significant first step in realizing this goal. We’re looking forward to the forum and will be an active participant when it convenes sometime this fall. Our goal is to help ensure innovation remains an important part of golf’s tradition.”
