Pro-Am & Corporate Outings: Work or Fun?

D. A. WeibringFor many people their first opportunity to play a great golf course is in a Pro-Am event or participating in some kind of corporate outing. And, because it may be a once in a lifetime experience, it is so important that you focus on enjoying the moment. And regardless of the surroundings, never forget that it is a game intended for your enjoyment.

Through the years I have had the opportunity to host and participate in hundreds of Pro-Ams, as well as Corporate and Charity outings. These events are a wonderful way to raise charity dollars, entertain important customers, or both, while enjoying a fun day on the golf course.

These events are generally described with the term of Pro-Am; honestly that only describes the golf. The accurate way to explain these days are Pro-Pros! As a professional golfer, I have always looked forward to learning from Professional Business Men to improve my level of expertise in leading our company, D. A. Weibring/Golf Resources Group.

In my experience, most playing partners become very nervous and excited when they have to display their "game" in front of galleries and the Pro's. I try to ask them about their companies and business plans to boost their confidence rather than experience a 4 hour "diet" of humility. If I can help them enjoy a few good shots, it can be a positive experience. Golfers tend to remember good things – they can have a good day!

I have had unique moments when my partners have hit me in the shin while I was trying to help correct their swing, stepped on the Pro's ball in the bunker while walking to their own, and even had to break up a fight between two team partners! Just another day at the office. Some partners get a little intense.

Most of all, I have been very fortunate to interact with so many good people and companies. The game of golf is a great way to bring people together to share competition, camaraderie and fun!

Here are the Top 5 things I would recommend the next time you find yourself in a Pro-Am outing or just enjoying a day of golf.
  • Please: Check your grip pressure. Feel the club. 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 works for me.
  • Take more club:
    • When in doubt – pick the extra club. (How many perfect shots do you hit per round?) Choose a club to take the pressure off.
  • Play the Percentages:
    • The center of the green is okay
    • Commit to the shot
  • Don't wear yourself out before the round.
    • Warm up, don't wear out
    • Balance your time
      • Variety of clubs
      • Chips
      • Putts
      • Go Play
  • Enjoy your favorite beverage – this is supposed to be FUN!
Hit 'em long and straight!
