Jeev Singh Urges Tours to End Regional Row

Milkha Jeev SinghIndia’s Jeev Milkha Singh has urged the region’s golf chiefs to end their row over the formation of an Asian-Pacific “super series” and work together to promote Asian golf.

The Asian Tour has accused the professional tours of Australia, China and South Korea of trying to muscle in on its turf after the PGA of Australia made the announcement last month.

The super series is proposed to be launched this year with six events. There are plans to extend it in 2010.

“I just feel we should promote the game globally,” the 2008 Asian Tour order of merit winner said.

“It should be good for the region. Even if they have differences, they should start a dialogue and try to join hands to make the game big because Asia is a big market.

“Let us try to make this game big in Asia … instead of trying to make statements at each other and not making the game big in the region,” he told reporters at a function.

Singh said having three separate tours—Asian, Japanese and the Australasian series—in the region made it tough.

“It is a lot of work because Japan is a different tour and different from the Asian Tour. Lot of things like how the players get ranked will have to be worked out.

“You will have to find a procedure, the order of merit or a way of handling exemptions.”

The 37-year-old won four titles across the European, Asian and Japanese Tours in 2008. He was tied for ninth at the U.S. PGA Championship before ending 12th on the European order of merit.

Singh, who was tied 16th at last week’s Dubai Desert Classic, wants to claim a maiden win on the U.S. PGA Tour this year. He is currently 34th in world rankings.

“I’m happy, I’m moving in the right direction,” he said at a function by Rolex announcing a $1 million five-year deal to help develop promising Indian golfers.

Singh has taken up hill-walking to improve fitness and plans to trim his playing schedule following an injury-hit 2008.

“All tournaments are going to be in the U.S. till the Augusta Masters,” he said, referring to the year’s first major in April.

“I have won everywhere else, so now I want to do it in the U.S. That is what my goal is going to be this year.”

A friend was present at the function with Jeev, and told me the interesting thing to note was that Jeev had no clue about the plans for this Super Asia series being proposed by the Australian PGA. Only when the mediapersons gathered around him told him about the plans did he get an inkling of what it was. It is clearly reflective of the splash made by the announcement of plans for a One-Asia series, which to be honest, has been minimal.

But I must say I completely agree with Jeev. While I am  not saying that the plan is completely useless there is no point in going ahead with a series like that unless all the tours in the region are on the same plane which definitely is not the case right now.

Also the fact that the Asian Tour has undoubtedly witnessed growth over the past few years, they would not want to mess around with the system. While tournaments are being dropped everywhere else, the Asian Tour is the only tour where tournaments are intact and in fact they have even added a couple of low profile tournaments to their calendar. And with the Japanese Tour also issuing a statement, nullifying the claims of the Australian PGA that a consensus has been reached, there seems to be no way that this series will be a success even though, I believe, they have gone ahead and strung together a few tournaments as part of the schedule.

Since its launch in 1997, Golf International has forged a reputation as the standout quality title in golf publishing. The caliber of columnists, writers, players and coaches is unrivalled, while the design and layout of the magazine separates it still further from the competition. In a congested market wrought with mediocrity, Golf International appeals to committed golfers who are as serious about their game as we are about ours.

The ethos behind Golf International is simple: our aim is to entertain, inform and educate our readers with a wide range of fresh and original editorial. Peter Alliss, Ian Wooldridge, Colin Callander, Tom Cox, Paul Mahoney, Clive Agran and John Huggan are listed among our regular columnists. Other notable contributors include Paul Trow and David Davies. We are particularly proud of our association with the teaching staff of the DLGA, who, under the guidance of the world’s No.1 coach – David Leadbetter – provide some of the finest instruction you will find anywhere. The popular Senior Tour player, Tony Johnstone, has also made Golf International his literary home.

With the generous and on-going support of Volvo Car UK, we are committed to developing our Amateur pages, featuring regular profiles, interviews and tournament news from both the men’s and women’s amateur game. Another innovation has been our Business pages, which provide the magazine with a unique angle on business-related stories, along with regular features from our resident experts on golfing memorabilia (Kevin McGimpsey), betting (Jeremy Chapman) and motoring (Anthony ffrench-Constant). We hope you enjoy the magazine and invite you to be a part of our continued success.

With a new distribution partner – Comag – in place from the August ’06 issue (and already delivering a significant increase in newsstand sales), we will be raising our game in the retail sector while at the same time consolidating our position as the premium title in the air and selected-sponsorship sectors.
