  • Russ Cochran is only the 2nd left-hander to win The Senior Open Championship

Russ Cochran upstaged some of his more illustrious counterparts to become only the second left-hander after Sir Bob Charles to win The Senior Open Championship.

The 52 year old American saw off all-comers with a superb final round of 67 on a day of low scoring and high temperatures at Walton Heath Golf Club, in Surrey, to finish on 12 under par and prevail by two strokes from his compatriot Mark Calcavecchia.

The American duo of Corey Pavin and the evergreen Tom Watson finished a further stroke behind courtesy of respective rounds of 69 and 67, with England’s Barry Lane the highest European finisher on eight under par.

Cochran, who began the day as co-leader with South African David Frost and Calcavecchia, birdied the opening two holes and picked up further shots on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes to reach the turn in 31.

Calcavecchia had been keeping pace with his compatriot after birdies on the second, third and sixth holes, but a double bogey five on the par three ninth hole, where he four-putted, ultimately cost him dearly. That left Cochran in charge of the tournament, and he came home in level par to follow in the spikemarks of Charles, who triumphed in 1989 and 1993.

The former US PGA Tour champion, who was tied third in last year’s Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie and was Rookie of the Year on the US Champions Tour in 2009, earned US$315,600 for his valiant victory.

Cochran, who had son Reed caddying for him this week, said: “The mindset I had today really helped me, because I haven’t been finishing off tournaments well this year. I feel like I should’ve won a couple of times, so it was starting to prey on my mind a little bit. But last night I thought of how Tom Watson plays when he’s in contention, and I tried to adopt his positive attitude.

“I was confident in my game all day, because I knew I’d been playing well. I was able to relax, and I got off to a good start by playing aggressively. After a few putts started to drop, my confidence just grew. It’s a wonderful feeling, and I really enjoy playing in Britain. I’ve always felt like my game is suited to the courses over here, and I enjoy meeting the challenge. I’ve always said my best chance of winning a Major was The Senior Open Championship, and I’m so glad I was proved right.”

Calcavecchia was left to rue his costly mistake on the ninth hole, but took more positives than negatives from the week.

He said: “I switched drivers today to the one I used last week at The Open and I drove it a lot better, so that’s encouraging. But the four whack on the ninth hole, those usually hurt you. The greens are tough here, but that was all my fault. I pulled both those little short putts, but that happens every now and then. So overall, I felt really good. It’s just hard to make a lot of putts on these greens, because they can be very tricky to read.”

Pavin, who captained the American Team at last year’s Ryder Cup, also found the greens difficult to decipher, but was similarly pleased with his efforts.

He said: “The greens are tough. A lot of them over here have the little rolls, so they are tough to read. I hit a pretty good putt on the 16th which didn’t go in, although I can’t really say the same for the 17th. But that’s golf, and overall I played well. It was good playing with Calc – he drove the ball really well today. We had a good day out there – it was a lot of fun.”

Watson also enjoyed his return to Walton Heath, 30 years after he played his part in America’s emphatic defeat of their European counterparts in The Ryder Cup.

The 61 year old, who finished with four threes, said: “It’s been fun. When I played my first round on Monday, I couldn’t remember very much about the golf course. So it probably took me until today to remember some of the intricacies of the golf course, and the greens. The one thing that concerned me the most playing in The Ryder Cup were the greens here, and how difficult they were with all of the little breaks. I remembered the strategy that I had back then – I should have remembered it earlier in the week, but I didn’t – and that strategy was just to play the line that you see, and not to worry about all of the little breaks. Just pick a line, hit it there and if goes in, it goes in. Fortunately for me today, quite a few of them went in.”

Lane, who returns to European Tour duty at next week’s Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland, was proud to have flown the flag for England with a closing round of 70 which featured an eagle at the sixth hole.

He said: “That was fantastic. The reason we play this game is to have that feeling of being nervous and getting in contention. It was great to get the juices flowing, I really enjoyed it. We have some very good players over here, and it was great to compete with the Americans like Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia and Corey Pavin. I’ve been competing with them all my life because they’re my generation, so it was just like the good old days.”

Frost could only manage a closing round of 72 to finish in sixth place on seven under par, one stroke ahead of a quartet of players which included Senior Tour champion Peter Fowler of Australia.

  • 2011 Irish Open gives home fans to see their two Major Golf Champions in action

Ireland set to welcome home Major Champions at Killarney

Irish golf fans will be able to give their two reigning Major Champions a rousing homecoming to remember when Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy tee it up in the Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club next week.

Pictured above: Darren Clarke, 2011 British Open Champion (Getty Images)

Clarke’s emotional victory in The Open Championship at Royal St George’s on Sunday meant historic back-to-back Major triumphs for Northern Ireland, following McIlroy’s record breaking eight shot victory in the US Open Championship last month.

Now Ireland’s golfing public will be able to demonstrate their typically vocal support and appreciation for both Major Champions in their national Open, ensuring a wonderful festival atmosphere in Co. Kerry on Bank Holiday weekend in Ireland (July 28-31).

GOLFBLOGGERUK shall be providing you with extensive coverage of the 2011 Irish Open at Killarney to include golf betting odds, draws, tee-off times, pairings, tv viewing times, news, prizemoney, scores and results, so please stay tuned in! To access this wealth of information on the Irish Open and all other European Tour events, please click here.

Clarke and McIlroy will also be joined by Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell, Ireland’s two other recent Major Champions, for what is set to be a celebration of the country’s remarkable achievements on the world stage over the last four years, which was sparked by Harrington’s 2007 Open Championship win.

“The Irish Open promises to be extra special this year with Rory and I bringing back the US Open Trophy and the Claret Jug,” said Clarke.

“We always enjoy an amazing reception from the fans in Ireland but I’ve got a feeling next week could be like nothing we’ve seen before. We are both really looking forward to coming home and celebrating Irish golf’s achievements and we will both be hoping to win the Irish Open to give the fans yet another reason to celebrate.”

McIlroy added: “Darren’s magnificent victory at Royal St George’s means the Irish Open will be even more of a celebration next week.

“The reception I received last month when I brought the US Open Trophy home was unbelievable and I’m sure it will be even better in Killarney when Darren also has the Claret Jug with him. It’s an amazing time for Irish golf at the moment and I’m sure the fans will help make the Irish Open a truly special event.”

More than 82,000 people flocked to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club last year when England’s Ross Fisher held off a final day Harrington charge to capture the title.

Tickets to The Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland are available NOW on www.europeantour.com/tickets., but time is running out for one lucky fan to have the chance of a lifetime by winning a place alongside McIlroy in the Pro-Am on Wednesday, 27 July.

Anyone purchasing a ticket, aged 16 years old or over on July 27, 2011 – and in possession of an official handicap - can enter the prize draw to play alongside McIlroy. The competition closes for entries at midnight on Wednesday 20th July, 2011. European Tour Terms and Conditions apply.

  • The Open Golf fans have been queuing up to get stuck in golf’s most notorious bunker

It’s most golfers’ worst nightmare but fans, course officials and even players at The Open have been queuing up to get stuck in golf’s most notorious bunker.

As the 140th Open Championship swings into life more than 3,000 enthusiasts chose to take on the fearsome St Andrews Road Hole bunker which has been stunningly recreated at the HSBC Golf Zone.

Almost one third of Wednesday’s spectators lined up to try their luck including Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and a host of golf fans from all over the world.

The HSBC Golf Zone – built to celebrate HSBC’s first year as Patron of the Open Championship – is the first experiential golf zone of its kind and scale in the UK and covers an area equivalent to almost five tennis courts in the Tented Village.

The Road Hole Bunker was recreated by Royal St George’s green keeper Sean McLean.

Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship at HSBC commented: “When you think about it we are here in Kent for The Open Championship but there are twenty times as many people playing St Andrews than Royal St George’s – there’s 156 out on the course and over 3,000 in the HSBC Golf Zone. This really demonstrates how much golfers love a challenge. The numbers are more than we dared to hope for and the feedback we have received has been fantastic.

“We are very grateful to the R&A for their vision and help in creating this area for the first time at an Open Championship, utilising their golf knowledge to allow us to offer visitors to Sandwich a truly interactive experience. Having been involved in golf since 2002, we underpin all our programmes around the world with a desire to bring the game to life and to grow the game at a grass roots level and the HSBC Golf Zone represents all that we have learnt over the years from our experiences.”

After escaping - or otherwise - the confines of the Road Hole bunker, visitors have been enjoying the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin competitions on the Tri-Screen Golf Simulator and comparing their swings to those of the best golfers with the help of FlightScope, the latest in tracking technology, while younger spectators are honing their golf and gaming skills in the Children’s Zone.

Information Pods featuring the iPad2, video walls and touch screen televisions are available throughout the HSBC Golf Zone containing everything a fan would wish to know about their favourite players, past and present.

A Heritage section demonstrates that while pressing buttons and touching screens is one way of getting a feel for the history of the game, wrapping hands around the kind of hickory-shafted clubs used in the days of Old Tom Morris is another, highlighting how the manufacture of golf clubs has changed across the last 300 years.

Those who would like to see our Open Championship links courses asking tougher questions of the players are enjoying the unique opportunity to design their own Open course. Finally, the Nikon Photo Experience is proving to be extremely popular with visitors embracing the chance to don a “Champion Caddie” bib and stand next to one of the best players in the world – for a memory ready to take away within 60 seconds.
