  • 2011 U.S Solheim Cup Team Picks Ryann O’Toole was the surprise pick for American Women's Golf Team

The only surprise selection in yesterday's Solheim Cup annoucement was 24-year-old LPGA tour rookie Ryann O’Toole as one of American ladies golf captain Rosie Jones' two wild card selections for the 2011 Solheim Cup match with Europe at Killeen Castle from 23-25 September 2011.

Team USA contains nine players from the victorious side of 2009. Jones’ other selection went to lpga tour veteran Vicky Hurst as the top 10 players in the US Solheim Cup rankings automatically qualify. Of those who qualified automatically on merit, only the number three ranked Stacy Lewis, who has played in the Curtis Cup, did not play two years ago.

Jones admitted: “This has been an extremely exciting and difficult selection process. I’ve been tracking these players for more than two years and tonight I feel we have built a fantastic team to represent the United States. Vicky and Ryann are two really solid players who will complement our team as we now focus on our strategy and performance next month at Killeen Castle.”

Juli Inkster becomes the oldest player to participate in the Solheim Cup at the age of 51 and will also be the first-ever playing assistant captain.

“I will be a player first and an assistant captain second and Rosie understands that. I feel like most of my career I’ve worn two hats as a mom and as a player, but it will be a challenge,” she said.

Golf Babe O’Toole, a California girl who likes to surf, is a graduate of UCLA. She recently finished ninth in the 2011 US Women’s Open. She enthused: “Rosie (Jones, US non playing captain) took a chance on me and that means more than I can explain. It means just as much as winning a tournament".

“To have someone go against what people might think and go out on a limb with a rookie. She can see what I’m made of. She said she can see my moxie. When I played well at the US Women’s Open, I thought of some new goals.

“Rosie told me I was on the radar and it’s been on my mind since. I wanted to do whatever it took to get on this team. I’m looking forward to playing with these girls and to representing America. The fact that I get to be amongst these girls is an honour and I know I can partner up with any of them to make a great team.”

O’Toole did add – “I’m ready to kick Europe’s butt,” – a provocative statement for one so inexperienced. In selecting the Californian, ranked 18 in the standings, Jones passed over Katie Futcher (12), Kristy McPherson (13), Wendy Ward (14), Pat Hurst (15), Natalie Gulbis (16) and Stacy Prammanasudh (17).

The 2011 European Solheim Cup Team, led by captain Alison Nicholas, will be named next Monday in Dublin, Ireland. Melissa Reid, Laura Davies, Suzann Pettersen and Solheim rookie Christel Boeljon have already secured spots on the team through the LET (Ladies European Tour) Solheim Cup point standings.

  • Tiger Woods Debuts Prototype Nike Golf Shoes on Bridgestone Invitational Comeback

Ahead of his return to competitive action, Tiger Woods has been working with one of the Directors within NIKE’s Innovation Kitchen, Tobie Hatfield, and NIKE Golf on a FREE-inspired prototype shoe that Tiger will wear during this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Originally developed in 2004 by a group led by Hatfield, NIKE FREE is a ‘natural motion’ technology that is designed to mimic and conform to the natural motion of the foot, coupled with the protection and traction of a lightweight performance shoe.

The FREE-inspired elements in this prototype model allow greater movement for the front of the foot, increasing stability with mobility. “This will help give Tiger greater stability as he addresses the ball. The freedom of movement that natural motion technology delivers will also allow more power to be released through the swing rather than through the body – which can happen when your feet are too static.” said Hatfield.

“I love the feel of NIKE FREE for training, so I asked Tobie if it was possible to bring that technology to the golf course. It’s exciting to see a conversation like that come to life and I look forward to wearing them this week,” added Tiger.

The majority of the upper consists of a polyurethane coated stretch fabric, also seen within the construction of NIKE Basketball’s Hyperfuse 2011. Part of the heel is created from recycled NIKE Air Max units melted into thread and then woven together to create a strong, breathable textile material. The FREE-inspired outsole is directly taken from NIKE Sportswear’s Special Field Boot designed for first-responders.

This model also has a half heel counter in both shoes to give more stability on the lateral side, particularly in follow through. The shoe also incorporates NIKE Flywire (first introduced in Beijing in 2008) attached to each lace loop, which when pulled tight envelope the foot for maximum comfort and stability.
