If you look at Homer Kelley's book the "Golfing Machine", he shows mechanically that the hips (not entire body) slide forward (not rotate) as the initial move and this causes the hands to drop into the "slot". Mclane and other top teachers also teach the first move is a sliding forward of the hips. If you look carefully you will see that rotating hips first causes the shoulders to also rotate and this will make you swing across the ball. Look in golf magazine and see the players face-on shots at impact. Hips are generally about 45-50 degrees to impact line. If you rotate hips first, the hips will be about 90 degrees and shoulders will be across target line.
