  • My Man Crush on Tiger

This is a totally great 10 day period. I was very vocal about the MDF rule and the Tour has announced that they are going to take another look. I said last Sunday morning that Tiger needed to not shoot another low number or the USGA would pull their hair out, trying to figure a way to change Torrey into a non-playable course for the Open. He went out and shot only one-under to win by only 8 strokes. Add those to my being lucky enough to introduce the new Nike Sumo Drivers this Saturday; getting to watch Tiger play two weeks in a row; four days of number 16 at the FBR; plus a little thing called the Super Bowl and you see why I am flying high.

Ok, so I had nothing to do with the Tour decision. It might have been all the players screaming about the new cut policy. Either way, Tim Finchem announced that the Policy Board would review their decision next month. Look for a change; I don’t think they will totally abandon the idea. It is, however, good to be on the right side of a story for once. Lately it seems every time I drop a “hot sports opinion” I am standing alone on an island.

I know many of you assume, and rightly so, that I have some sort of “Man Crush” on the world’s number one. I do. And why not? It has nothing to do with being a leader junkie. I admire any person that takes his God given ability and makes it even better. So many of us are satisfied with mediocrity. Tiger continually asks the question, “What can I do to get better?” See, I believe there should be a couple of players chasing Tiger. It just seems that “no one wants to really pay the price.” If that means practice 24 hours a day, then do it. If it means hitting 1000 putts a day then do it. Why is it that the best player is also the best practicer? A rhetorical question. Enjoy what you are watching. Embrace it. I remember my father talking about Lou Gehrig. Gehrig probably did not have the talent of Tiger, but he made sure no one played better.

Any chance we get to watch TW two weeks in a row is icing on the cake. As I sit here writing, I am watching the 32 year old, who just traveled halfway around the world, lead at Dubai. He shot a remarkable 65.

What I love to watch, and try to learn from, is his confidence. No matter what the shot, Tiger Woods focuses on the task at hand. The sameness in timing and in routine is staggering. Put a stopwatch on him. You will not believe what happens. Want to teach your kids how to get better? Not at golf but at life? Sit with them and watch Tiger. Watch the practice swings. I wish my children would study for exams the way TW focuses on a golf shot.

  • Missed the Cut, Did Not Finish

Well, another week on the PGA Tour and another 19 players will receive a pay check and not get to finish. Now before you get crazy, I know 90% of you don’t give a darn about the players in 70th place. But what about us silly 10% that love keeping track of our favorite players? Hoping against hope for The Miracle. What miracle, going from last to first. Or just fighting to get some Ryder Cup points.

Let me explain. The PGA Tour, or should we say “the television program that shows the worlds best hit a little white ball and appears weekly but has to get off the air before 60 minutes or some other program”, changed the rules this year. It is no longer 70 and ties playing on the weekend. It is now 70 and ties unless the number is over 78 than the number reverts to the closest number to seventy.

I could explain more but you would need an abacus.

At Sony 18 guys got the MDF… Incidentally, MDF stands for “Made the cut, did not finish”, so shouldn’t that be… MTCDNF? Oh, that would take too long and the networks would never go for it.

At the Sony, Jim Furyk said, “This rule sucks.” Even John Daly thinks the new rule is wrong, “"I don't understand the rule," John Daly said after making the cut on the number but being unable to continue. "I think it's crazy. It's a stupid rule, I'm sorry. I grinded my butt off to shoot even. Then I find out on 18 you might not be playing. I just wish we would have known."

And they are right. Just think, one week you can finish 63rd and play on the weekend, the next you finish 63 and “bye-bye”.

This weekend we miss Anthony Kim, Lucas Glover, Chris DeMarco, Ben Crane and Charley Hoffman, just to name a few.

With as many short field events as there are today on the tour schedule, perhaps we should let the players actually fight it out for their income. Maybe these guys could go play miniature golf; maybe they could wrestle. Sure the sun goes down; sure we’ve got to get all those commercials in, but there has to be a better way.

Call me crazy… how about split tee times? How about threesomes on the weekend? All I know is…’Let them play; Let them play.”

  • A few thoughts leading into the great Tiger/Phil showdown...

...and let's not forget the other 152 players in San Diego.

Growing up, my dad always talked about the "three legged chair". The three legs were knowledge, ability, and desire. To define more clearly, let's change the word ability to focus and the word desire to heart. Want to be great - learn your skill completely... stay focused on the goal... have the heart to succeed. Each leg is equal in length; each leg leads to success. Success in life and success in work. As we head into the 2008 season, plenty of people have asked, "Who is the player most likely to chase Tiger?" I personally believe the answer to that question lies in the three legged chair.

Who can put that chair together in 2008? Well, I asked some people whose judgment I respect. All agree there is but one person that can chase Tiger Woods, his name: Phil Mickelson.

There is no question of Phil's knowledge. He is the only player that has the shots. I also have never questioned Phil's heart. It is the focus where Phil seems to be a few inches short. Now, I want you to understand there is nothing wrong with this. Many years ago, I decided spending time with my kids was more important than any job I would ever have.

Over the last month, Tiger Woods has spent more time practicing his craft then perhaps at any time in his career. His desire to succeed, his desire to get better, his focus are at an all time high. I am not sure we can say the same about Phil. Time will tell.

I finally have someone on my side – Last year, I spent a number of these articles proclaiming my belief that Anthony Kim was "IT". I now have someone supporting my right brain thinking. Mark O'Meara said yesterday that at 22, Kim's technique is better than Tiger's was.

Mark said, "He (Kim) could win multiple tournaments a year easily and win major championships. That is how talented he is."

As the youngest rookie on the tour last year, Kim had 5 Top 10 finishes and started 2008 with a third at the Hope.

Here is what separates Tiger from everyone that plays. When Woods was 22, did we ever discuss his being young? Never. Tiger was an old 22. Kim has the knowledge, he has the ability, but Kim is really 22 (I wish I was too) and I question his focus on one and only one goal. I believe he will get there, but for now, Kim will succeed on his knowledge and ability.

Saying goodbye to a friend – Speaking of the three legged chair, Stevie Williams has a perfect chair. He is the greatest caddie of all time. Some of you might remember the name Steve Duplantis. Steve worked with Rich Beem and for a time with Tommy Armour III. Many believe his skills were equal to those of Williams. Beem said, "He was the first person who showed me the value of a good caddie."

Steve Duplantis died early Wednesday. He was hit by a taxi cab while trying to cross the street in San Diego. He was there to caddie for Eric Axley.

Duplantis could have been the best. I mean it. Ask the guys he caddied for. But that three legged chair had one leg missing. Steve knew the game, knew how to get it across to his players, but Steve's focus outside the ropes went to plenty of different places other than golf. And most of those did nothing but cause him problems. It got to the point were players did not want to take a chance with Steve. Furyk fired him after showing up late one too many times.

You enjoyed being around Duplanits; he made his players better. He just had a tough time doing that for himself. He will be missed.

Thank you Phoenix – I know, I might have been standing alone in my desire to spank John Daly, but not anymore. One of the Tour's most popular events, The FBR Phoenix Open, said no to John. They gave 20 year old, Jason Day their last sponsor's exemption.

This is a good thing. Let's let John's ribs heal. Let's let John do a little refining of his shape. Let's let John deserve one of these exemptions.

Enough about Daly - I know I am hard on John, I hate talent wasted. So I've decided to become more positive. I am going to root for David Duval. David, like John, made some decisions. I like David's better. I want David back. I want David to win. From here on, no more Daly - only good vibes (how 60's) for David. You go guy. I am behind you.

    See you Sunday at Cowboys!
