Rglate – Thank you for your question.
Although there may be a number of reasons for hitting the ball low and right with your longer irons, the most common reason is a swing path that cuts across the ball at a very steep angle and smothers the ball.
We usually create this type of action when the club swings “over-the-top” of the swing plane as we try and make contact and we are initiating the downswing with the upper body. Since I can#%92t see your swing at the moment, I would imagine this to be your trouble. At anytime you are more than happy to upload a video of your swing for a better evaluation of your problems and how to improve on them.
I have talked some about an over-the-top move on the downswing in the forum because it is such a common move. For you it sounds like you are getting very steep on the downswing and moving well ahead of the ball producing the cut, or slice spin on the ball and when you move your body forward too abruptly, you are taking loft off the club or smothering the ball through impact. Almost like you are lunging forward to chop a piece of wood!
We need to feel a rounder swing plane and not be so aggressive from the top of our swing and begin to feel the arms a bit more pliable. Here are few good drills to help eliminate the club coming over the top, using the lower body better, stay behind the ball and swing through on a much rounder plane.
Here is a fantastic two part article from one of our Tees2Greens contributors Lisa Ann Horst. The feet together drill will help you in more ways than one. http://www.tees2greens.com/LisaAnnHorst.aspx?id=267
Also, here is some help from earlier forum entries that I know will help to improve your swing!
The baseball swing! Grab a bat a swing it like a major leaguer. I stress this drill a lot and it is fantastic, because it teaches you how to feel the lower body generate power during the move down to the ball and will incorporate a rounder fell in the swing. Try a few big time baseball swings, you will begin to feel the lower body load, clear and explode with the hands and arms whipping through late in the swing.
Also, we do not advertise nor does tees2greens in anyway promote this item, but it is the only teaching aid to come along( in my opinion )to truly help a player shallow out the bottom of his/her swing and eliminate the over the top move. The “Inside Approach” has been a favorite suggestion of mine for years. Give it a look, it sounds like the perfect range assistant for you.
I hope these suggestions will help and feel free to let me know what else I can do to assist in your progress!
Good Luck!
