    My swing has fallen apart.......looking for tips and suggestions to help

    As of late i have been extremely busy with finals, and because of this i did not have the time to swing a golf club.......typically i practice 2-3 times a week and i typically shoot in the mid eightys.....I am not an extremely long hitter(7iron 150) and i tend to hit the ball on a very high trajectory(esp my wedges). From time to time i do struggle with a slice on my driver/irons, and i am looking to improve my swing........Any tips or drills would be greatly appreciated and i look foward to your responses....

    Nolimit569, thank you for your question and thank you for the videos of your swing!

    I am sorry that you are having so much trouble; I know how frustrating it can be not having all the time you need to work on your swing. Being able to see your swing on video is fantastic and swinging indoors from time to time is a big plus, just don#%92t let your mom catch you!

    You have a really nice swing that flows fairly well and its time for you to stop shooting in the eighties! So let#%92s take a look.

    I couldn#%92t see your grip as well as I would like to, but it looked a bit loose and weak. Do you overlap, interlock or baseball grip the club? I would like for you to work on getting the grip a bit more compact or together and use an overlap or interlock grip that is a bit stronger if you are not already. (not too strong though). I love the grips you can buy in the golf stores that are pre molded to a proper way to hold the club. I like to give my students the grip to take home; then while watching TV or chatting they can put their hands into the correct position so it becomes more natural. Give that a try.     Your overall set up is very nice! Good lines and posture. I wouldn#%92t change much of anything there, looks great. Just be aware of your weight at the address position, make sure you don#%92t get on the toes too much or flood the right side before you take the club away. You need to be able to load up the left side on the back swing. Good weight transfer is important!

    As you move the club away on the back swing you can see that the club moves well inside the plane. If we get the club to far inside it can lead to a number of different problems. Let see if we can get the club started on a better plane and keep it more out in front of us.     This picture from Golf Digest of Phil Mickelson and Instructor Rick Smith shows a great example of the proper position of the club during the first part of the backswing. I would like to see your first move get here. At the beginning it will feel like you are taking the club way outside, but the club will be on-plane and square. A great drill to insure you get the club moving back on plane and low and smooth is a simple one that I know you have heard of before.

    From your normal set up position place a ball directly behind the club resting next to it and no more than inch behind the club. Next, concentrate on making a fluid first move rolling the ball straight back as you begin the back swing. It will give you good extension and an idea where the club is on that first move. If the ball doest roll away straight, you are either taking the club to far inside or outside; watch the direction and spin of the ball.

    Since the club moves inside abruptly, it#%92s easy to get a bit flat and laid off at the top and you do a bit. It#%92s not bad and I think that will begin work itself out as you get the first move down. You will begin swing on a much better plane that will feel very steep in the beginning. This will set up for a more consistent downswing that will help you hit down through the shot a bit more. That#%92s the next area of discussion.

    You had mentioned you hit the ball very high and not as long as you should. The reason why this happens is that you use your arms more than your lower body on the down swing and have an early release of the club. It#%92s very common for most players and easily remedied if you practice two of my favorite drills. In other posts I have mentioned a drill called the "Woosh" drill. This simple fantastic drill can alleviate many problems including casting, poor acceleration and the inability to delay the release of the golf club.

    I want you to grab your driver out of your bag and flip it upside down so you take your grip near the hosel just above the head. Take your normal stance and begin to make your normal swing. You will notice the "woosh" of the club shaft as you swing. Be sure to listen where the loudest point of that “woosh” is. We want that sound very late in the swing rather then early. If you have an early release of the club or casting motion from the top you will hear the “woosh” before the point of impact. Ask a friend to tell you where the noise is and then from that point I want you to try and achieve the loud “woosh” as late as possible in the swing. It will feel odd, but it will become more fluid as you begin to accelerate the club properly through impact and you won#%92t have to worry about more lag or delayed release because it will happen naturally. You should gain a substantial amount of distance combined with improving the lower body action with yet another previous forum entry that is a simple and effective drill.

    The baseball swing! Grab a bat a swing it like a major leaguer. I stress this drill a lot and it is fantastic, because it teaches you how to feel the lower body generate power during the move down to the ball and will incorporate the use of our legs being the major source of power in the downswing. Try a few big time baseball swings, you will begin to feel the lower body load, clear and explode with the hands and arms whipping through late in the swing. As you begin to let the lower body take over the downswing you will realize the “woosh” drill becomes more easily accomplished with the lower body working more through impact.

    The finish looks good; just remember to stand tall and balanced.

    You have a good swing that just needs a few improvements to get the most of your ability. Work on a more compact and a bit stronger grip. Try the molded grip; they are great for retaining the feel.

    Remember, when working on the first move drill; roll that ball behind you away straight and stay fluid and hit that slot like Phil does. Once you get the first move down the rest of the way to the top should improve.

    The “woosh” drill will help in many areas so be sure to really work on it! You can also incorporate the baseball swing into your practice routine to insure the lower body action improves.

    I found the baseball drill, takeaway drill, and woosh drill to be extremly helpfull and i will continue to work on them.......I watched my swing in slow motion today, and it seems like i dont lose my wrist cock until my hands reach my left hip.....I am aware that the whoosh drill is used to help this, but i was wondering if there were any other drills i could do, and i was also hoping you could take another look at my swing and see where else i need improvement......

    Nolimit569 thank you for the new swings.

    I was glad to hear that the drills are helping and it will take some time to get a good feel for them and the changes that will take place.

    Although we might be able to see big time improvement on video and indoors, the true test will be if these changes hold up on the course and that is not always the case. Changes take time so keep after it.

    If you#%92re looking for some other pieces to work on there are a few that I would like to see progress as you are working on your current drills. Just don#%92t work on too much at one time. Take a piece and try to perfect it; then move on. Then you can work all the different parts together to gain the feel of an improved golf swing.

    Looking at the back view it still looks like the club is whipping inside, but not as much. Nice. Keep working on keeping the club out in front of you a bit more. Along with this view be sure to retain the flex in your left knee on the backswing. This will keep your hips from turning too much on the backswing and it will shorten up the swing. Once you loose the flex in your knee and get too much hip turn on the backswing you can loose your coil and resistance. We want to wind up turning against the lower body to gain some torque, then we can release that energy on the through swing.

    Watch Tiger, Ernie, Luke most of the modern swings.They turn so well against the lower body, creating a stable base on the back swing building up incredible torque to unleash through impact. So resist the hip turn and keep the flex in that left knee. Again, it will feel very restrictive at first, but you will see many rewards from this.

    I would also like to see you a bit rounder with club as you swing through. Have the club follow the correct plane even through finish. The club looks a bit steep after impact which can lead to holding off the club face during impact.

    Your lower body can still be more aggressive as well, so keep at it. The whoosh and baseball swing drills are really fantastic for you. Use them as you work on the left knee position and resisting the hip turn away.

    You are young and flexible so you should be able to do this and don#%92t be afraid to let those hips go on the downswing.

    Work hard and be sure to let me know how you are doing.

    Here is a great Youtube video of Luke Donald commented on by the great Peter Kostis. Watch how Luke turns against the lower body and retains his back knee flex and keeps the club out in front and on plane. He has fantastic lines, so don't be afraid to copy them. Also, watch the club follow the plane of his swing even after impact!
