Fear of Spiders Not a Worry on Tour

TaylorMade's new Rossa Monza Spider putter continues to attract converts and, in fact, racked up its first tour win at the FBR Open.

The Rossa Monza Spider putter earned its first PGA Tour win at the FBR Open. Despite its size and unconventional appearance, pros are putting the club in their bags because of its stability and ease of alignment.
"I put it in the bag on Tuesday, so I've just kind of been fiddling around with putters and trying to find something that I like," said winner J.B. Holmes. "You know, I struggled a little bit last week with putting. It's hard to putt at Torrey Pines on the poa annua anyway, but I was hitting some -- it wasn't good strokes. It wasn't just the greens."

Holmes finished second in putts per GIR (1.608) and tied for 10th in putts per round (27.3) for the week using a belly-length version of the Spider.

"I had a couple putters made, and I putted with it a little bit on the putting green and liked it, so I tried it in a practice round and putted pretty good in the practice round and putted so-so yesterday, but I putted pretty well today," he said after recording 25 putts on Friday.

Holmes also rolled in putts on the final hole and a playoff hole to best Phil Mickelson and take home the trophy.

In all, nine players used the Spider putter in Phoenix, including Joe Ogilvie, Pat Perez, Sean O'Hair, Michael Allen, Peter Lonard, Dean Wilson and Tim Petrovic.

"I just switched to this new Taylor Made putter," Perez said. "In Hawaii it was unbelievable, but then I get on these kind of greens -- the ball has got to go in absolutely perfect here....

"The weight is in the back of it which helps the putter to go through, and then the lines in the face help it roll. So for greens like this it's ideal."

As well, Sergio Garcia put the Spider in his bag for the first time last week.

"Changed the putter this week," Garcia said in Dubai. "I've got still the belly putter but just a new Rossa putter, the Rossa Corza that just came out, Spider, and it feels pretty good."
