    Club Closed on Takeaway

For years, my game has suffered from a closed club on the backswing. I was wondering if picking up or too vertical of a plane can contribute to a closed club face? Any help or drill to correct this malaise would be appreciated.

    Re: Club Closed on Takeaway

Picking the club up on too steep (vertical) plane can contribute to a closed clubface.  The reason is that the body and arms cannot rotate on that plane, therefore closing the clubface on the backswing,

The things to check for are:  How does your trailing hand (right hand for a right handed golfer) look in the address posiiton?   Can you see any fingernails (other than the thumb)?   If so your right hand is in a position to either go too around or get rotated towards the ground (outside of forearm  looking towards the sky) thus shutting the clubface as the arm has to lift the club on a vertical plane.

Secondly, is the right side of your body rising or swaying in the backswing?  That also can cause the clubface to close.  During one of these motions, the tendency is for the shoulders and thus the arms rotate on too horizontal a plane and then lifted by your arms to a steeper plane, odtef with a closed clubface.   So check in a mirror if your right hip is rising or moving to the right (for a right handed player) outside your right foot.  If that is the case, check your setup so that you are bending more in your hios than your knees.  This will help keep presssure in your hips as a balance poiny and secure your right knee and leg.

And third, a too erect posture can cause a lifting of the arms to provide enough downward movement in the down swing to hit the ground.  So check your posture so that you are bent from the hips with your shoulders pulled back and not rounded until your arms are hanging relaxed over your shoes.

The best drill to get the correct sensation of the foreatrm movement in the backswing is to stand erect, and swing a club with your trailing (right fir the right hander) arm seeing the inside of your forearm as you swing back with your thumb pointing loke a hitch-hiker.  Do that a few times while standing erect and then start slowly getting into your posture as you continue to swing the arm in this manner.  Then you get the sensation of the arm and the rotation of your body are matched and you will be able to swing the club on a flatterm more correct plane.
