    Let's talk golf balls ...

There are a lot of really good balls on the market, and I know that I'm not good enough to tell the difference between the best models, so I thought it would be fun to hear what everyone plays and why ...

I'll start ... I play the Titleist NXT Tour because it provides the right compromise between performance and price ... they cost $25 and they stop well on short and medium iron shots ...

Years ago I tried a number of other balls that worked well -- most notably Maxfli Revolution and Nike Tour Accuracy, if memory serves -- but I kept coming back to the NXT Tour and haven't experimented much in recent years ... Pro V1's are awesome around the greens, but they cost almost twice as much (which is a big deal for me because the primary course I play is a real ball eater) and they spin a bit too much for my liking on short and medium iron shots ...

So I'm looking forward to hearing what you've got to say ... I may experiment with a few new balls early this spring, but unless I find a ball that works better than the NXT Tour and costs the same (or works just as well and costs less) I will stick with the tried and true favorite ...

I know several guys who play the NXT and like them.  My golf balls of choice have been  - Titleist So/Lo, Callaway HX Tour, and of course the Pro-V.  I am looking forward to trying the new Titleist DT Carry and DT Roll balls coming out new this season - I believe the So/Lo has been discontinued.  I used to play Slazenger's all the time, but haven't in a few years.

If you go to www.golfballs.com you can sign up everyday to win a dozen Callaway HX's!

I just saw on golfballs.com that Callaway has come out with a new ball - the HX Hot Bite - http://www.golfballs.com/PB1701-NWH/Callaway-Golf-HX-Hot-Bite-Golf-Balls.html

I like them because they have a little Green on them - cool!  I might have to pick up a few.

There was also an article in Golf Magazine (Feb. 2008) about what is the best golf ball for you - there was a lot of analysis of golf balls, but I really didn't ever find out which was exactly right for me...overall though I think the NXT Extreme and Pro-V were the balls most chosen to fit different games.

I have been using the NXT and NXT Tour golf balls and have been fairly happy with them. They have a pretty good feel to them and I can control them on the green.

For X-Mas my mother in law got me a dozen of the Callaway CX3 and CX3 Hot (I think thats what they are) and I think they are horrible. They are hard as a rock and dont give any spin. I have a really high loft on all of my shots and I was teeing off on a par 3 with an 8-iron, the ball was probably 15 feet passed the ball mark which has never happened to me before. The thing just dropped like a ball of lead, Im trying to use them as water balls so I can go back to the NXT lol.

I just took a quick peak at the Golf Digest 2008 Host List (http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/ratings/balls/2008/hotlist_balls) and they've given 11 balls their gold rating ... I've only played two of them (the Pro V1 and the NXT Tour) ... so I'll have to go back and read more closely about the other 9 ...

I'm not really worried about distance ... it's not that I hit it all that far, but I hit it far enough to play the game ... and until I learn to hit it straight more often I would only hit it farther into the woods if I hit it any farther than I do now ...

In a perfect world, I would find a ball that performs like a Pro V1 for $2/ball ... right now, the NXT Tour is the closest thing I've found (and a comment in the GD write-up would seem to agree with that, at least on the surface), but I'm going to check out some of the other highly rated cost-effective balls this spring ... and I'll check out GM and other sites as well (and T2G, of course!) ... it should be fun ...

I like the Top Flite D2 Feel.  It doesn't cost a bunch (about 1 dollar a ball at WalMart) and it fits my game.  Feels good coming off the club and flies as well as the Pro V1 for me.  My next choice would be the Titelist DT SoLo.  I have even used the Top Flite Feel in the gold box.  They are cheaper than the D2 Feel and I don't have anything bad to say about them.  Guess I am just cheap.  I keep my ball in play most all the time.  Don't lose many.  So I really like a durable ball that doesn't get all beat up before I can get two rounds in.  I almost never play the Distance balls that I find.  I just hit them on the range.  Keep it in the short grass!
