    I’m a regular reader of all things golf and have recently joined your site (gallen) I recently achieved the feat of getting my third albatross (Double Eagle) and never thought I would be a potential record breaker, however my mates convinced me to write to you guys to see if you would publish my story

    Back in 2006 I was lucky enough to hole out for an albatross 1 after taking on the green at the Par four 15th (290 yards) at Arabian Ranches Golf Club, Dubai http://www.thedesertcourse.com/index.asp and am now proudly on the hall of fame and the owner of a Mont Blanc pen the sponsors of the hole in one club.

    In 2007 whilst playing at the Four Seasons club http://www.fourseasons.com/dubaigolf/golf.html I managed to hole may second at the Par 5, 18th (510 yards) hole for which the club presented me the ball mounted in a wonderful glass trophy

    This Friday (30th May) whilst playing at the Arabian Ranches club I stood on the 15th tee filled with memories and stories of my albatross (for those who aren’t tired of hearing it, that is) and as usual took out the driver and went for the green, suffice to say to the amazement of my three playing partners the ball finished in the hole. Three albatrosses in three years, two on the same hole has to be some sort of record, anyhow I feel better sharing it with you whatever

    PS. I’ve now been cut to an 11 handicap (Was 13)

    That is very impressive and a cool story. I would love to hear more about it and in length. Can you detail out each round and what went on and what you felt? Love to hear about it all!

    I went to a couple of the sites you had - looks like beautiful places - but HOT (95 degrees right now...phew!).

    What a feat!  Many congratulations, and enjoy the memories ... while you've proven that it's possible, I'm sure that it's exceedingly rare, even given the millions of golfers and double eagle attempts that occur each week!

    In response to more detail, I have a vague recollection of the first round in 2006 culminating in a respectable 84. It could have easily have been in the 90s had it not been for the three under par on the 15th.

    The two at the par five on the Four Seasons course was a little more memorable only because the green keeping staff were beside the green as one of the course marshals who witnessed the whole thing and suffice to say reported back long before I made it to the club house. The score was less memorable, in fact the only reason I had taken the “Tiger line” across the water was because the card was pretty shabby. Having driven on the fairway I had a slightly up hill lie with 200yards to the middle of the green. The flag was cut on the left side of the green where the water cuts back in (Sunday position). Anyhow I took out a five iron and took aim at the centre assuming the worst case would be coming up short. Anyhow the strike was pure but I pulled it a little, so it was the green or the water on the line I hit it. Lucky for me, two bounces and in the hole, must have looked impressive for the spectators but you now all know the truth. (An angry drive and a pull) “Better to be lucky than good”. On arrival at the club I was met by the pro who was enthused by my achievement and immediately confiscated the ball promising to return it later. After a few drinks!!! Returned home. The professional called me later in the week for a press call and I was presented the ball mounted in a crystal trophy. Great memory, trophy has pride of place in my office.

     

    The most recent is still clear in my mind, we started on the 10th so the 15th was my 6th hole and the card was looking OK. As always at this hole I just take out the driver and have a go, the worst that can happen (if you are straight) is coming up short in the sand. I knew I’d hit a good ball but we couldn’t see the bottom of the flag or surrounding green. Assuming I had made the green or was just short we set off to the green. On approaching I had seen three balls in play, none on my line. I wondered over and started searching just short in the rough but was unable to find the thing. To be honest I had to go and look in the hole but didn’t expect it to be there. You can image my excitement when there she was sitting in the bottom of the cup. I called to the other three guys (My pal Stuart and two Korean gents we had been paired up with) before taking the ball from the hole. One of the Koreans verified it was my ball (We were both playing a Titlelist 2, mine had a ring around the number) followed by much shaking of hands and the quote of the day from Stuart “You lucky B******”. As usual word spreads fast and the director of golf and club manager were waiting when we finished the 9th. Another Mont Blanc pen and the first hole in one of the 2008 season. (Checkout the Hole in one boards online - http://www.thedesertcourse.com/holeinone.asp) Incidentally I shot 39 out and 40 on the way in, hence the cut in handicap.

    Yes the weather is hot out here but you get used to it, they are forecasting 44 degrees C tomorrow and we have a tee off booked for 0710hrs and yes I will be going for it on the 15th..........watch this space. If you are ever in Dubai, come visit the Arabian Ranches Club, a true test in great surroundings managed by a great team. I have been a member there since the day they opened their doors.

    Back to earth, thought I would share my experience of the now legendary 15th this week during the monthly medal. I was in a group with two players I didn't know so it gave me ample opportunity to regale my stories of both double eagles I had achieved at this hole previously. Having built myself up and bored my playing partners I was left with no option but to go for it and forget about protecting my card. Suffice to say it was too much to ask for. My tee shot was pushed to the right catching a tree on the edge of the fairway. On approaching my ball it was soon clear that the tree was directly between me and the target (Not so much chat now). Having little choice in the matter I chipped out sideways leaving me with third shot of about 130 yards (A nice easy 9 iron or a hard PW) to the pin which was at the back of the green. The nice easy 9 turned out to be a little too much as I watch the ball sail right over the pin and come to rest in the heavy rough for three (No birdie even). My other playing partner was Stuart my good luck charm of double eagle fame whose quote went something like this as I approached my ball now nestling nicely down in the thick stuff “Back to earth my friend, time for the hole to get its own back”. Armed with my trusty “Rusty” I chipped it on to the fringe and let it release down to the hole, I can’t tell you what Stuart called me as the little guy disappeared underground for par the hard way.Moral of the story; fortune favours the brave and sometimes taking your medicine from behind a tree does pay off. Will be playing the newly opened Els Course (http://www.elsclubdubai.com/) here in Dubai this weekend for the first time, hope I have a tale to tell when the day is doneFairways and green

    No great tales of magic moments on the Els Course, in fact a very disappointing 92 on what is a fabulous track. Not helped by a sand storm of sorts for the last five holes, to be honest the wind was a factor for most of the round, the only good news was the temperature stayed below 36 C and the humidity was nonexistent. The actual course is a real gem with all the trademarks of Ernie, deep fairway bunkers and well guarded small targets. The greens were very fast and true, you would never believe that the course is new. I’m looking forward to playing it again soon and taking my “A” game with me. A nice touch as we finished the staff presented us with a metal bag tag with our names engraved on as a memento of the day. Must just add the temporary club house is better than most well established ones in the UK. They have really gone all out on the facilities and the general service level.  Looking forward to the next visit very soon, playing at the Montgomery Dubai (http://www.themontgomerie.com/) next week, here’s hoping it gets better.

    Sorry to hear about the 92, but it sounds like you really enjoyed the course.  Wow, the Montomerie looks awesome - thanks for putting links up!  I hope you have a great round there.  Stay cool...and feel free to send heat to Minnesota.  Smile
