    Putters in depth

Seeing as putting is a real important if not the most important part of the game I thought we should all have a discussion on what we have used and what we are using and if possible why. Putting is mostly about feel, so it's ok if we get subjective but if you can impart any technical aspects thats good too.

I have been a medium Mallet Putter for most of my short career. I started with a ping eye blade with a heel shaft and just felt it was too light. I had a real hard time with my distance control and in particular felt I needed to really whack long putts.

My next putter was a heel shafted medium size mallet similar to the rossie. I tried a 2 ball of a friends but found it too big and my distance control was missing on the other side of the spectrum, blasting short putts. The medium to small mallet size ended up working great for me in both short range and long range. It was also heel shafted.

Once I really started nailing my distance control, I realized just how many putts I was pushing and pulling. (hey if you blow it by or leave it well short it's hard to see what else you did wrong) I kept trying to go straight back and straight through, but through a little reserch found that that is not the best way to hit a heel shaft putter. You are supposed to let the face open slightly and close through the ball. I attempted to try this with very little sucess, seemed like if I could get my driver back to square I should be able to get my putter back pretty easily. Well for my it was just not happening.

I finally got the same mallet head, only in a center shafted model. This is the current model I am using and it has been working really good for me. I can use my normal pendulum straight back straight through stroke and the clubhead stays square and online through the entire stroke. I have significantly increased the number of 8-15 foot putts that I am sinking instead of just missing.

So there ou have it, a synopsis of my putter evolution, hopefully some of you can share something similar. Maybe for some it can shed some insight into the feedback you are getting from your current putter and provide ideas for possible improvements.

    Re: Putters in depth

I have been shopping around for a new putter and for some reason I have it in my head that a Ping Craz-e putter is exactly what I need (I hope the conclusion isn't that I need my head examined!) - I am currently using a copy of a 3-ball and it's pretty heavy, and possibly just a tad long on the shaft - I make my share of putts, but as I was reading Matt's post above, I often find myself blowing the short putts by, too.  So in my shopping I've found a variety of options for this putter - heel/center shafts, 32"-35" lengths, offsets/no offset, etc - they even have longer/belly putters, but I don't think I'm there (yet).

As Matt said above, putting is probably subjective, but I was wondering what other people are using and how they went about picking the putter they have.  I have found most putters are 35" - is that for a standard male - standard height?  If I am 5'6" should I be looking at a 32"-33"?  The Center shaft appeals to me (because that is what I have now), but the heel offset seems to be popular.

If anyone has a different putter they recommend, feel free to share!

    Re: Putters in depth

Good stuff guys and gals.It really always comes down to what looks and feels great once I am over the ball. If I can’t have confidence in my equipment I am done. So I will spend hours rolling balls with a number of different putters when I "feel" a change is in order. It happens too often. I have a very dark and cold closet where all those little guys are thinking about all the putts they missed. Every once in a while I will hear one of them say "please one more chance, I promise not to three putt" those pleas hold little weight in my book. The last time a ping whimper came from the putter jail and I gave him that second chance, he later fell to an untimely death off a 60 foot ravine. The course will remain nameless to so as to not help Karsten to come after me for the murder of an anser. All in all… putters have been a struggle and as much as I change I have to rely on that good feeling, if only for a day.Chipshot, before you go chopping down putters know that you will be compromising the weight of that putter, so basically you are changing what you felt picking it up initially. I have cut off some putters at times only to jack up the manufacture weight. Then you have to mess with other means to make that putter function correctly and gain that weight and feel you had before the cut. Just a detail I look at, so I suggest having the manufacture send you your proper size or get fitted by someone good. It really depends on the length of your arms. Being gangly and having money arms here at 6foot I often use a 34’’ putter rather than a 35’’Anyone ever consider a putter because of left or right eye dominance?
